Schon länger war es unser grosser Wunsch, eine Kastrationsaktion durchführen zu können.
Wenn man täglich das Elend der Straßenhunde vor Augen hat, verletzte, ausgesetzte, abgemagerte Tiere findet und nicht mehr weiß, wo man sie noch unterbringen und wie man sie versorgen soll, liegt dieser Wunsch sehr nah: Nachwuchs muss unbedingt verhindert werden!
Sowohl bei den Hunden auf der Straße, wie auch bei denjenigen, die zu einem Haushalt gehören. In Rumänien ist es weit verbreitet, dass Hunde frei im Garten leben oder dort angekettet sind. Werden die Hündinnen läufig, sind sie für freilaufende Rüden gut zu erreichen. Trotz einer gesetzlichen Kastrationspflicht, die (leider) Rassehunde und Arbeitshunde als Ausnahme zulässt, ist der Großteil an Hunden in Privathaushalten noch immer unkastriert. Sei es aus mangelndem Wissen oder weil sich die Menschen die Operation einfach nicht leisten können. Behördlich überprüft wird die Kastrationspflicht nur sehr selten, es scheitert dabei schon alleine an den personellen Ressourcen. Umso wichtiger, dass Tierschutzvereine Kastrations-Kampagnen durchführen und dafür umfassend Werbung machen, damit man möglichst viele Tierhalter:innen erreicht.
Für dieses Vorhaben konnten wir, Dr. Radu George und sein Team, gewinnen. Dr. George und seine Mitarbeiter:innen führen regelmäßig große Kastrationsaktionen durch. Sie arbeiten auf einem hohen Niveau mit einer minimalinvasiven Technik und einer guten Narkoseführung.
Wir legen großen Wert darauf, dass nur sehr gut geschulte Tierärzt:innen für diese Arbeit engagiert werden. Große Schnitte, lange Narkosen und unsichere Nähte können ein großes Risiko darstellen für Hunde, die postoperativ natürlich nicht so versorgt werden können, wie dies z.B. in einer Klinik der Fall wäre. Beim Team von Dr. Radu George wussten wir die Tiere gut aufgehoben und konnten wieder einmal beobachten, wie die Hunde schon kurz nach der Narkose aktiv und unbeeindruckt durch die Gegend sprangen und sich auch keine Folgeprobleme einstellten.
Im Vorfeld der Aktion haben wir mit den Behörden gesprochen. Der Bürgermeister war begeistert, machte Werbung für die Aktion und stellte ein geeignetes Gebäude zur Verfügung. Er sorgte dafür, dass dort ein provisorischer OP eingerichtet wurde, der den Tierärzt:innen die Bedingungen bot, die sie benötigten. Auf den öffentlichen Aufruf meldeten sich viele Leute, die ihre Hunde kastrieren lassen wollten.
Oft ist aber der Transport der Tiere ein Problem, da sehr viele Familien kein Auto haben. Erfreulicherweise begleitete die Animal Police die Aktion, indem sie die Menschen, die nicht mobil sind, mit ihren Tieren abholten und nach der Operation auch wieder nach Hause fuhren.
Zusammen gingen wir von Haus zu Haus, klärten Tierhalter:innen über die Notwendigkeit von Kastrationen auf und konnten so weitere Menschen gewinnen, die dieses Angebot nutzten.
Die Möglichkeit einer kostenfreien Behandlung ermutigt natürlich auch Menschen, denen es sonst finanziell nicht möglich wäre, ihr Tier oder ein ihnen bekanntes Tier mit gesundheitlichen Problemen vorzustellen. Der Cane Corso Hund mit Augenproblem, ist nur ein Beispiel für Hunde, die sonst vermutlich keine medizinische Hilfe erfahren hätten.
Besonders betroffen macht es uns alle, wenn erkennbar ist, dass die Tiere nicht schön gehalten werden. Immer wieder treffen auch Besitzer:innen mit Hunden an Ketten ein.
Hunde in Anbindehaltung sind leider noch immer ein tägliches Bild. Natürlich werden dann Gespräche geführt und Hilfe angeboten, um z.B. einen Garten oder einen Gartenbereich sicher einzuzäunen, damit die Tiere sich frei bewegen können. Tatsächlich kommt es immer mal wieder vor, dass man sich darauf einlässt und Unterstützung annimmt. In vielen Fällen bleibt es aber dabei, dass wir uns nur vor Augen halten können, dass eine Hündin an der Kette, nun zumindest nicht mehr während der Läufigkeit von Rüden nahezu überfallen wird und später in diesem begrenzten Lebensraum ihre Welpen gebären und großziehen muss, bis sie ihr schließlich weggenommen werden.
Neben den Privathunden war es der Plan, auch herrenlose Hunde zu fangen, zu kastrieren und später in ihrem angestammten Gebiet wieder freizulassen. Viele ließen sich ohne Schwierigkeiten einsammeln. Aber nicht immer sind die eigenständigen Hunde zugänglich. Und auch von denjenigen, die sich sonst problemlos anfassen lassen, wird so mancher misstrauisch, wenn er merkt, dass man etwas Ungewöhnliches vorhat. Es ist immer wieder interessant, wie gut die Tiere unsere Gedanken und Emotionen erfassen können und jede noch so kleine Aufgeregtheit oder Anspannung spüren. Doch auch für diese Fälle hatte man vorgesorgt und jemanden mit ins Boot genommen, der die Genehmigung und das Knowhow besitzt, Hunde mit einem Blasrohr zu narkotisieren. So konnten auch scheue Tiere eingefangen werden, die nun endlich keine Würfe mehr auf die Welt bringen müssen. Dieser Teil des Plans war also ebenfalls voll aufgegangen.
Am Ende konnten während der Kampagne, innerhalb von 2 Tagen, 90 Hunde und einige Katzen kastriert werden.
Wir waren im Dauereinsatz und es kostete uns viel Kraft zusätzlich, aber wir sind überglücklich, das wir Dank der grossen finanziellen Hilfen, diesen so immens wichtigen Teil von Tierschutzarbeit, umsetzen konnten.

diese gelungene Aktion konnte stattfinden, weil wieder einmal viele Rädchen ineinander griffen und mehrere Organisationen an einem Strang gezogen haben. Netzwerkarbeit ist so wichtig und fruchtbar, denn gemeinsam sind wir stärker und können gute Dinge entstehen lassen. Möglich war all das aber letztendlich nur Dank der Hilfe unserer Spender.

For a long time it was our great wish to be able to carry out a castration campaign.
When you see the misery of street dogs every day, find injured, abandoned, emaciated animals and no longer know where else to put them and how to care for them, this wish is very close: offspring must be prevented at all costs!
Both the dogs on the street and those that belong to a household. In Romania it is widespread that dogs live freely in the garden or are chained there. If the female dogs are in heat, they are easily accessible to free-roaming males. Despite a legal castration obligation, which (unfortunately) allows pedigree dogs and working dogs as an exception, the majority of dogs in private households are still unneutered. Be it due to lack of knowledge or because people simply cannot afford the operation. Officially the castration obligation is examined only very rarely, it fails thereby already alone at the personnel resources. It is therefore all the more important that animal welfare organizations carry out castration campaigns and advertise them extensively in order to reach as many animal owners as possible.
For this project we could win Dr. Radu George and his team. Dr. George and his team regularly carry out large castration campaigns. They work at a high level with a minimally invasive technique and good anesthesia management.
It is very important to us that only very well-trained veterinarians are engaged for this work. Large incisions, long anesthesia and unsafe stitches can be a great risk for dogs, who naturally cannot be cared for postoperatively as they would be in a clinic, for example. With the team of Dr. Radu George we knew the animals were in good hands and could once again observe how the dogs jumped around actively and unimpressed shortly after the anesthesia and how there were no subsequent problems.
In the run-up to the action we talked to the authorities. The mayor was enthusiastic, advertised the action and provided a suitable building. He made sure that a temporary operating room was set up there, which offered the vets the conditions they needed. In response to the public appeal, many people came forward to have their dogs neutered.
But often the transport of the animals is a problem, because very many families do not have a car. Fortunately, the Animal Police accompanied the action by picking up the people who are not mobile with their animals and also drove them home after the operation.
Together we went from house to house, educated pet owners about the necessity of neutering and were able to attract more people to take advantage of this offer.
The possibility of a free treatment of course also encourages people who otherwise would not be financially possible to present their animal or an animal known to them with health problems. The Cane Corso dog with an eye problem, is just one example of dogs that otherwise probably would not have received medical help.
It makes us all particularly concerned when it is recognizable that the animals are not kept nicely. Again and again owners with dogs on chains arrive.
Dogs in tethers are unfortunately still a daily sight. Of course, conversations are then held and help is offered, for example, to securely fence in a garden or garden area so that the animals can move freely. In fact, it happens every now and then that people get involved and accept support. In many cases, however, it remains that we can only keep in mind that a female on a chain, now at least, is no longer almost attacked by males during heat and later has to give birth and raise her puppies in this limited living space until they are finally taken away from her.
In addition to private dogs, the plan was also to catch stray dogs, neuter them and later release them in their ancestral territory. Many could be collected without difficulty. But the independent dogs are not always accessible. And even of those who otherwise let themselves be touched without any problems, some become suspicious when they notice that you are up to something unusual. It is always interesting how well the animals can grasp our thoughts and emotions and sense every little excitement or tension. But also for these cases we had taken precautions and brought someone on board who has the permission and the knowhow to anesthetize dogs with a blowpipe. In this way, even shy animals could be captured, which now finally do not give birth to unwanted puppies. So this part of the plan was also fully successful.
In the end, during the campaign, within 2 days, 90 dogs and some cats could be castrated.
We were in constant use and it cost us a lot of energy in addition, but we are overjoyed that we could implement thanks to the great financial help, this so immensely important part of animal welfare work.
